<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css">
    <button type="submit" class="submit-btn">Submit If You Can</button>

    <script src="app.js"></script>
$submit = $("submit-btn");
$submit.attr("disabled", true);

The error you receive is

Bummer: There was an error with your code: ReferenceError: Strict mode forbids implicit creation of global property '$submit'

So you will want to declare $submit first. Then to select by class you need to include a period before the class name:

const $submit = $(".submit-btn");
$submit.attr("disabled", true);
