It's asking for regex word boundaries. It's the reference to the position that is either before or after a string. So the word boundary.

A tortellini sees a yarn as a doggy teacher.

\bsees\b -> position 13-17. A tortellini [here]sees[to here] a yarn as a doggy teacher. \ba\b -> Two matches, 18-19 and 28-29 A tortellini sees [here]a[to here] yarn as [and here]a[to here] doggy teacher.
