Portfolio

Including my own site, how many sites or projects should I have in my portfolio before its respectable to approach an employer?

I would think that quality, rather than quantity would be a better presentable portfolio.

I would much rather see a few great projects than many poor projects.

I'm looking to see if there is a magic number to show a varied skill set. Is 5 projects enough? I understand that they need to be quality projects.

There's no right answer to this question.

However from a layout point-of-view 6 could work.

You could have a gallery- style layout, with 3 thumbnails on the top row and 3 thumbnails on the bottom row.

@Matt James and Joseph are both right...quality is definitely more important than quantity, and there's no right answer as employers will have different expectations.

That said, if you're just getting started six quality projects is a pretty good sample. Don't forget that if you have one or two projects that have a lot of quality and depth to them (i.e., well designed, multiple pages, responsive, different functionality and behavior, etc.) then one or two might be enough to make an impression and get your foot in the door for that first interview.

It's all about being able to demonstrate the skills that are required for the position you are applying for. I'd be happy to get on Skype and provide you more personalized feedback, please send me an email directly if you're interested....watson [at] teamtreehouse [dot] com.
