Should i be able to understand how to operate the different OS. I understand that some company's use mac only and this would put me behind if i have only ever used windows/pc computers.

Courses Plus Student 11,734 PointsTo be honest, the Mac OS X operating system is so well designed that it is really intuitive. I'm not going to tell you to go out and spend $1000+ on a Mac just so you can get some experience using one.
However, I would like to recommend using a Mac for front-end development anyway if you can afford to get one. After having a Macbook now since 2009 for developing, when I go back to my PC and start developing I then realise how beautiful and intuitive Mac's are for developing.
So to sum up. Don't go and buy a Mac purely if you just want to experience using one for a future potential job that hasn't happened yet.
Do buy a Mac if you want to invest in a better developing environment.
