What are the differences between higher and lower level programming languages

You can think of higher level programming languages as more human-readable while lower-level languages are closer to machine language. We think of "lower" as being closer to the computer hardware.

I always assumed, high level wouldn't touch the O.S, Mid level would touch the O.S and low level touches the hardware but then again what do I know.
