Programming Books

So I am going to be starting the java track then the android track, and I was wondering what are your views on programming books? I've seen books on java and other programming languages and I was just curious about what their benefits were and whether they are necessary. Someone once gave me the advice that I should not only follow treehouse courses but I should also buy books on the programming languages I am learning, and study them. If this is the case, what books should I buy? What are the benefits? And is it necessary?

Note: I am a complete beginner with no prior programming experience, and I am going to be starting the java track, then android.

Books.. The conventional method of study and our best friend as it is. Now following a book gives you exercises to practice and stumble upon new stuff.. explore Java in context of your question. Suggestion. Treehouse is Awesome.. You'll get all you need.. Teacher and support.. Now if you are the book type as well then go ahead with the book of your choice that suits your learning style... Practice Practice.. and Practice.. Get into the feel of programming.. Then learn about data structures and algorithms and apply it in your language.. This would develop the analytical and logical thinking.. It's essential if you want to succeed.. All the best.. You can ask more..

thank you so much very informative :)
