Push notifications work in genymotion emulator but not on real device. How?

I had to improvise since this video is pretty out of date. I am using android studio and used the instructions for setting up push notifications on parse.com as they had different instructions and some methods on this video are deprecated. I receive push notifications on my emulator but not on the real device. Both have the same app installed on them. Any ideas?
