Adding a class (or an ID) to an HTML element gives you an easy way to select it in CSS, and can often be a good option in development.

But I think the course is teaching ways to select elements without making HTML changes. Sometimes there are reasons why the HTML cannot be changed, so it's good to know how to select using CSS only.
