Question - Wordpress - customizing Wordpress - child folder/style.css file

Hi, I am having trouble creating a child folder (Stage three of 'Customizing Wordpress' in 'Wordpress Development' track).

I have done roughly 3 and a half minutes of the lesson, but when I go to search for the newly created child theme in my themes section on the dashboard, it is not there. In its place is the message:

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

Name:
Twenty Thirteen/twentythirteenchild

Description: Template is missing.

When I was copied and pasted my style.css file into the newly created twentythirteenchild folder I opened it, as instructed, and it did not look like the opened file in the lesson, rather it was in notepad form, so I presume that this is where the problem is. Perhaps I have copied it from the wrong place (I simply copied it from the twentythirteen folder in my downloads).

The lesson instructs to copy and paste from project files, but the mouse pointer then disappears from the screen and it is unclear where this is.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.
