Request for advice on switching Windows to Linux

I currently have a Lenovo ideapad u430 touch that runs Windows 8. I want to try out Ubuntu.

I have read that you can run Ubuntu alongside of Windows. Do you think that will slow the computer's speed?

Have you ever switched? Do you have any advice to a newbie?

I going to do this. I have determined that you really are handicapped trying to use Windows with Treehouse.

I am now trying to figure out how to back up Windows 8, as they recommend in the link. This Laptop doesn't have a disk drive and didn't come with a disk for Windows 8.
