request.open('GET', 'footer.html') not working?

I've watched video twice and checked AJAX formatting on w3schools course. Just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

app.js
var request = new XMLHttpRequest();
request.onreadystatechange = function () {
  if (request.readyState === 4) {
    document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText;
  };
  request.open("GET", "footer.html");
  request.send();
};
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>AJAX with JavaScript</title>
  <script src="app.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
  <div id="main">
    <h1>AJAX!</h1>
  </div>
  <div id="footer"></div>
</body>
</html>

You are missing a closing curly bracket at the end of if statement. Should be

var request = new XMLHttpRequest(); request.onreadystatechange = function () { if (request.readyState === 4) { document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText; } }; request.open("GET", "footer.html"); request.send(); };

THANK YOU, REGENA!

I ignored the if statement because it was prepopulated in the lesson. Now I know better.

Thanks again!
