Resetting values to default

I have a placeholder in my input field, but when i do input.value="" it goes blank, i don't have any form tags. How can i reset my input for select to default value e.g valure of placeholder?

Normally setting the value to an empty string would reveal the placeholder.

But you might try setting it to null instead if the empty string isn't doing it.
