Reversing effects of CNAME

I made a CNAME file with the domain name I want to use, but haven't purchased yet. I want to bring it back to the [username].github.io as it originally was, but having no luck. I replaced the CNAME file in my repository using that format, but still going to the domain name I haven't purchased yet. Any advice?

I'd imagine just deleting the CNAME file should make it go back to normal.
