Rewrite Rule or 301 redirect?

When you just want to redirect an old url to a new one, what's the difference between those two? If there's no difference, wouldn't it be easier to use the latter?

Instead of something like this: RewriteRule ^receipt.php$ receipt/ [R=301,L]

Do this: Redirect 301 /receipt.php http://localhost/receipts/

Both directives are essentially the same thing and I would recommend the second directive because it is more succinct.
