Let me quote something helpful:

(...) Povolets notes that "[t]he likelihood that PHP is being used is strongly anti-correlated with company quality." (...)

Personal preference I think, but from experience its quicker to get up and running with PHP, but having used PHP for years, I find it more fun/rewarding using Rails.

Hope it helps

Go for Rails! I can't give you any pros and cons though, since I don't know PHP at all, I'm simply biased toward what I already know ;).

Thank you very much looking forward to viewing more comments, I will probably try rails first, although i still plan to learn php. thank you so much for the comments.

I'm still trying to decide whether to stay on Treehouse and learn PHP or Ruby. One online article will say to learn PHP, another will say to learn Ruby, it's so frustrating. One person on the forum suggested learning PHP first and then move on to Ruby and then Rails. There are only so many hours in the day so I'm still questioning which one is more beneficial to take on.
