Running program outside of Treehouse Workspaces

How can I run the programs we work on (e.g. TreeStory.java) outside of Treehouse Workspace? Is there a particular editor anyone would suggest using? If so, can I copy and paste the script, or do I have to write the program from scratch, in an outside editor?
