Sass,Compass,Zen-grids

Hello everybody, Can anyone help me to show me exactly how to compile zen-grids with sass and compass.I am not sure should i set $zen-columns and $zen-gutters in every @media queries.Example: 12 columns for desktop, 4 columns for tablets or what.
