Saving in workspaces

I'm using a mac with snow leopard. whenever I try to use the keyboard shortcut to save my work, it tries to save to my computer. Does anyone know how to get that to save just in workspaces? It's getting tedious to click file save each time

Hi, I also use a mac, I have updated my OS to Mavericks. CMD S works just fine for me. Maybe this could be the issue? Any reason you your not using The latest OSX? Hope this helps.
