self contained article tags

I tried to place the <article> tag before the h3 element and the closing article tag (</article>) after the <p> element

You will want to keep the article tags intact and not try to embed other tags within them. Use <header> as an example. In the code above you could say the header tags group the h1 and nav elements. These are the two sets you want to group with article tags:
