Seperate REST API Namespace vs internal REST API for my apps to communicate

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a Ruby on Rails site and a native Android app to interface with said site. I'm trying to determine what the best practice is for creating the JSON interface that my applications will use, if this is a seperate versioned API or if just using responds_to json in my standard controllers would be better for all tools I create.

Later in the process, I plan to produce a public API, though it might be more limited in scope compared to my official client will be capable of(design decision for another sprint).
