simple question about throw

okay the only reason I ask is cause I cant find a direct answer from googling,

 private char validateGuess(char letter) {
  if (! Character.isLetter(letter)) {
  throw new IllegalArgumentException("A letter is required");

when you do throw and call an exception, will this make the code go back and ask for a new letter from validateGuess method?

if not can someone explain what happens?
