Size to start with for responsive design and breaking points

I like to build a responsive html template and create my own Wordpress theme afterward. Like to know what pixel size for the site I should start with and the breaking point I should include for my media queries?

I like to build a fully responsive template with retina display, but I am a little confused with the iMac pixel resolution and information about retina display.

Start with 1024, 768, 480 and 320 - but don't stop there.

This might be helpful too:

@media (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2), (min-resolution: 192dpi) { /* Retina-specific stuff here */ }

Thank you!
