slicing in photoshop..

Can someone please explain the point and benefits of slicing images in photoshop. I can't really understand the need..

In a workflow where you create your design or mockup of a website or app in photoshop, you can slice your images. Those images you can use as a background for your footer, header, etc. The main benefit is that you can export all your sliced images at once (via save for web).
