General Discussion

Slightly OT but I'm looking for help with error message

Does anyone know why I keep getting the error message

"Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data. Error code: ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE"

when I try to open some sites but not others on both Chrome and Safari? For instance, treehouse, facebook, twitter all work ok. But, wordpress, wired, ny times, and others don't. It just started happening and I can't figure out why.

NB - I tried running my laptop in safe mode and all sites are fine. But I don't remember installing or changing anything in the last few days that would cause a problem. Thanks in advance if you can help.

I had a very similar problem happen with a machine running Internet Explorer; thought it wouldn't load any pages at all if it wasn't loaded up in safe mode. My solution was to remove all traces of configuration information for the browser (basically a profile delete) and restart the computer. Upon opening the browser again, it will generate all that configuration info again and you should be good.

Your problem does sound a little more ominous; as it is not working in both Chrome and Safari. I would suggest trying to create a new user account on your machine, logging into that account, and see if you are getting those issues. The purpose of this is to try it with a (seemingly) fresh account and not be hindered by any possible plugins or addons you may have installed.

Thanks. I'll give that a shot. I've been thinking of wiping the drive and upgrading to Mavericks. I've got plenty of backups, so if your suggestion doesn't work, maybe I'll start from scratch.
