Inkscape is a brilliant piece of software. It is open source and free, check it out and have a go. I've been using both Illustrator and Inkscape and I'm happy with both.

Adobe Creative Cloud is not overly expensive. It used to be, when they had it in Creative Suite form, that you'd pay $3,000 or more for a package of a few of their applications, but when they went to the Creative Cloud format, it's a lot cheaper in the short run (and more affordable for most, in my opinion), to pay $29 a month, which allows you to use almost everything they have. Well worth it if you are going to work in any part of the creative side of this industry.

You get a months trial free but if you are going to be using it professionally yes you will have to pay unfortunately

I downloaded the free trial and when I make the svg the image is butchered up. I followed the directions in the video perfectly. I tried 3 times to make sure. The svg is missing about 15% of the original file.

Unfortunately, I've heard lots of reports of the latest Illustrator CC having really messed up the SVG exporter…

I haven't had any problems with it, and I've used it both on PC and Mac.

Adobe must be making bank. There really isn't any software out there (to my knowledge) that compares to theirs lol

They've been making bank for years. It used to be that you had to buy the whole suite outright for thousands of dollars. Now at least the Creative Cloud is set up on a monthly fee, which means instead of shelling out $3,000 to $5,000 for a Creative Suite package, you pay like $29 a month. I can afford that.... and it's well worth it if you are going to do this as a profession.
