So we need back end technologies to write JSON files ? Then in which situation do we use JSON in only front end?

I now understand about AJAX, but Dave wrote his own JSON file for this tutorial, right? Then does it mean we can't use AJAX without back end technologies?

Normally AJAX is not used on the front end only. AJAX's primary purpose is to grab data from a server. And this is related to backend stuff.
