Currently the split view controller only shows up by default within the ipad application and I was wondering how one could make it show up within an iphone application

Hello George, it seems that split view controller was exclusive for iPad until the latest iOS 8. I guess is has to do with the older iPhones not having a screen large enough to handle the two simultaneous views. With the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus its probable that this feature will be available. I seems you'll have to program with swift to give that function to your app.
