I get "the color should be red" message. As far as I can tell I assigned the variable "$time:morning" correctly and made sure to use the "==" signs in the if/else statements. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It looks like you're declaring the $time
variable and if/else statements inside the mixin. If you write them outside the mixin, you should be good-to-go.
