Starting wordpress

Ok so i need to learn wordpress to update other peoples websites. I got a internship and im wondering in the videos, its says for people that are already hosting a site. I just want to learn how to update other peoples websites is that possible?

Justin,

It doesn't matter who owns the WordPress site, the skills apply. The "self hosted" part in the videos just means WordPress that's not hosted on WordPress.com--but really, much of what's in the videos still applies. Here's a decent explanation of the difference between self-hosted (WordPress.org) and hosted (WordPress.com) alternatives: http://diythemes.com/thesis/rtfm/differences-wordpress-com-org/

To update all the content on a wordpress site you'd need access to the wordpress control panel for that site, you get to the control panel via url for example mysite.com/wp-admin/ the employer should have an admin password that you can use to login.

It would also be helpful to get FTP access so you can easily modify the theme ( the html / css / javascript etc. that the site is built with).

You may also need access to the server the site is hosted on. There are many different types of hosting, so you need to find out how/where they host the website. A lot of sites use 'shared hosting accounts', if this is the case there should be a server control panel that you can log into on the hosts website.

Also check out Launching a website for more info on FTP and hosting providers as well as the wordpress development track.

Hope this helps!

^^^^^^^ Great Explanation.

Make sure you well understand how to edit Wordpress themes and use FTP etc..... And make sure you know at least Basic HTML and CSS before upgrading a site, I also was offered a internship with a Marketing Company to make Wordpress sites for them, but I really wanted to fully brush up my skills.
