General Discussion

staying focused

Im trying to get back into practicing and learning from the site but I continue to have focus issues, staying on the prescribed "tracks" is helping for the time being but one thing Im not really sure about is how long and how much I should try to learn and do each day/ session? thoughts?

also trying to be more of an active participant (i.e. forums) is an attempt to stay focused as well.

an hour or so a day is a pretty good amount. Participating in the forum is always a good idea.

I sometimes have this issue too. I would say the courses on Treehouse has held my attention a lot better than other courses out there. Mostly thanks to the excellent tutors, short video and quiz formats. I've tried courses where they code out the whole thing in front of you, man that was tedious.

I would say the best thing to keep you on track is to have a project to go alongside what you are learning. Doesn't matter if it's not intended to go live, its all for practice. Instead of copying the course project, use the same techniques for your own. It certainly helped me.

I found it helpful to not just concentrate on one track but to take breaks or learn something new. Treehouse often involves a lot of coding which requires effort. Setting up development environment, loading up your old code and then remembering what the hell you were doing last time etc. :)

Mix in a few of the other courses which require less interaction. I recently did the SEO course which is mostly just listening and questions, that is really good if you have a spare 10 minutes and can help to keep your motivation up because you are still doing things.

Then there are the usual focus things, make sure you take breaks. Remember this is learning, not work. You don't have to get it all completed before Friday ;) Keep wherever you do Treehouse an awesome place to be. That always helps keep focus high, because you want to be there.

Anyhoop, hope that helps :)

Thanks for the ideas, it really does help just trying to focus and just say ok I'm gonna do this for an hour or so every day, helps retain the info, which is helping me to stay motivated to keep on keepin on! thanks again all you guys!...
