The task 1 instructions are: "create a new <li> element containing the student name "Sam Smith", and save your new element to a variable called $newStudent". But this code is assigning the variable with the result of placing the element, not the element itself.

The task 2 objective does involve placing the element, but it probably expects you to use the variable and not change it.

so what is the correct code? can you tell me? please.

First, put the code back the way it was to pass task 1.

Then, add a new line that calls the "append" method using the variable created in task 1 as the argument. The new line will not have an assignment.
