styling file inputs

What's the best way to style file inputs??

Pinterest has an alright one in the top right corner with no a '+' plus sign. Etsy has a cool one when you upload products...I was able to make it like a plus using CSS but it wasn't semantic and i had problems with it...any help would be greatly appreciated
