Super Newbie Question - Strings and "printf"

They are in seperate files; when I compile this code it says printStream cannot be converted into strings. Why is that?

public class HelloWorld{
     public static void main(String []args){
        Toys nToy = new Toys();
     }
}
public class Toys{
    public String variable = System.out.printf("We are a making a new Pez Dispenser.");
}

The problem is in the Toys class and the problem is that:

System.out.printf("We are a making a new Pez Dispenser.");

has return type PrintStream, but the type of variable is String.
