Testimonials of self-teaching, did it work for you?

Hello,

I am just asking the community if they would like to share a testimonial of how self-teaching code has gotten them a job in the developers community. I am currently an intelligence analyst with the US Army and I have been studying code via TreeHouse and YouTube and I love every minute of it. I just want to verify that if I studied for a few years, and built up a portfolio, that I could confidently find a job as a front-end web developer in hotspot locations instead of working a job I wouldn't quite enjoy (just for the money).

Thank you in advance!

Hi Wesley,

I am a Treehouse alumni, I started with no knowledge and using Treehouse as my main education (I added books, and a lot of Google-searches leading me to articles with information!). Now I work as a Software Engineer and couldn't be happier.

If you don't give up and enjoy it it is definitely possible. Good luck!

Most of your answers are in the Treehouse blog. I would highly recommend reading some of the stories in this section. There are some amazing success stories in there. Although, I'm not currently a full-time developer, even my story is in there. I do have some extenuating circumstances though. But take a look around. I feel like it probably wouldn't even take you a "few years" given enough motivation and discipline. I've known a few ex US military and not one of them was lacking in discipline.

Hope this helps! :sparkles:

Hi Wesley,

Late 2013 I studied front-end development at Treehouse for about 3 months. Although I'm a designer I've benefited so much from what I learned here. It landed me plenty of good jobs and freelance projects. It also enabled me to work much more efficient with front-end developers and together produce much better products for our clients. Right now I'm back for some time to brush up on some of my skills and learn some new ones.

In March of 2020 I began my front-end development studies at Treehouse. I have been applying and building things that I would have never been able to without the teaching I received there. Unfortunately, I am still out of work and looking but am ever increasing in abilities and knowledge and encourage the curriculum to anyone who is interested in learning how to build apps and websites. I started from ground zero and it has been difficult. I have, since graduating, applied to hundreds of jobs, attempted many freelance jobs and actually got paid for one...I am hopeful that this hard work, dedication and great instruction will indeed lead toward a profession which utilizes the skills and knowledge that Treehouse has provided. I do have to say that I wish they had provided more post graduation job placement and job searching assistance. I really love doing this but I am unsure where to go or what to build. I'm assuming this is normal and I WILL NEVER give up on my family or the dream of giving them something better. SO, thanks Treehouse, for the knowledge and continued learning, I hope sincerely that I can make it pay off someday. Blessings to you all.
