The code below sets an EditText variable from the layout of an Activity. Set the petName variable to the value from this EditText.

what should I do for this question ?? I did not understand it !!1

I think you might just want something like:

EditText petNameField = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.petNameField);
String petName  = petNameField.getText().toString();

The petNameField holds the EditText field that you are interested in. Calling .getText().toString() on an EditText object will return the text in that field which you can then store as a String, petName.
