the order of media queries

I first put the breaking point at 480 px first and the one with 660px after and got an error message. Then I changed the order and it was correct. It seems like I have to put the breaking point 660px before the breaking point 480px. Why is that? I understand that it might have something to do with the nature of cascading style sheets but I dont understand why!

In CSS, the last rule overrides others with the same precedence.

The code you included above doesn't seem to match your question. But assuming your media queries were intended to be effective on sizes up to the breaking point, it would make sense for the smaller one to come last. Otherwise, anything that the smaller one might set would be overridden by the larger one since it would also satisfy the same criteria.
