The print("Added! ......etc") doesn't print; not sure why?

shopping_list = []

def add_to_list(item):
    shopping_list.append(item)
    # notify user that the item was added and state the amount left
    print("Added! list has {} items ." .format(len(shopping_list)))
def show_help():
    print("What should we pick up at the store?")
    print("""
Enter "DONE" to stop adding items.
Enter "HELP" for this help
""")

show_help()
while True:
    new_item = input("> ")
    if new_item == 'DONE':

Indent your add_to_list(new_item) to be in line with the code comment above it. Code works great then.

Remember that Python is particularly picky about white space and indentation.

Thanks Ken, but...shouldn't the "def add_to_list(item):" and "add_to_list(new_item)" be indented together? Like "def show_help():" and "show_help()" thanks

You wouldn't be adding the new_item to the list though if that function call is outside the while statement, correct?

Try adding in a print(shopping_list) statement at a couple of different spots in your code to see what that list contains. Then move the add_to_list() call inside the while statement and see how it changes.
