Tips for building an algorithm

I am wanting to learn how to build an algorithm similar to the matching feature of match.com or e-harmony. The algorithm needs to later be implemented into a website I am building not an app. I have never built an algorithm before and I don't even know where to start. Does anyone have any recommendations on video's to watch?

Here is a TED ed talk behind OKCupid about it's algorithm. It does a nice job about explaining how it made an algorithm to match people by doing math.
