What defines age? A number?

Correct. :-)

To use the function you would call something similar to: random_age(21);

The following from the php documentation describes php data type behavior.

"The type of a variable is not usually set by the programmer; rather, it is decided at runtime by PHP depending on the context in which that variable is used."
