Troubleshooting server frameworks

I have been trying different server/servlet frameworks in JAVA (notably vertx and undertow ). I read the documentation and spin up a quick test. However, I will often come up against issues where I have no visibility if the server is set up correctly (i.e. handling the request I sent to the url).

I can post specifics on my setup, however, I would rather get suggestions on some abstract troubleshooting methods for verifying if the server is listening on a particular URL.

I can see that the servers are listening on a specific port by using nmap. I wonder if there is another networking tool that would assist here.
