Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Hi guys, help would be greatly appreciated on this. I have been trying to set up word press on this site for a couple of days and just keep coming across problems. I think it is a server connection issue but not sure how to get around it.

I have set up the wordpress site as I would normally uploaded the files to the ftp fine and set up and logged in fine to wordpress on the site but now can't upload images / plugins / themes and keep getting this error...

Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Not sure what else to try, but would greatly appreciate some help, I tried the wordpress forum and no one got back to me with any ideas. I am also under a little bit of a time constraint as I wanted the site live by the weekend.

It is hosted on the clients own server and uses plesk 9.5.4

Thanks in advance :)

Oh and I have worked out a way of adding a plugin by downloading the zip file, extracting it and then uploading that to the ftp into the plugin folder but this will not be a very good way to do the whole site, would be better through the wordpress interface as My client would want to manage the site once live.

Please help, Thanks in advance :)

From your FTP client, right click on the wp-content directory, the uploads directory and the plugins directory and you'll see an options for permissions. Check those there and then a quick Google search will tell you what you need. Should be something like 664. Just getting started on the day so can't remember 100% right.

Thank you for your help. I have now resolved the issue :) Cheers guys!

Hi Alex, you said that the site is hosted on your client's server. Email the admin of the hosting to help you with this problem, he might need to change the permissions on the wp-content or uploads directory.

Thanks for your reply, I have the admin details, is that something that would be simple enough to change myself?

Hey Alex,

Have you checked the permissions and ownership of the folder? You might be able to contact your host to get help with this.

would that be something I can change myself from the ftp or in plesk control pannel?

It might be, if you know what kind of server is and you have some administration experience. But the admin could be able to explain what are the necessary steps or even he can write a script that you can easily use in order to admin your WordPress site. Ask him, i'm sure you don't need to email him every time.

Ok. Thank you, I will try emailing the admin. Thanks.
