ungrouping does not allow me to take things apart with the divide options elected.

when i ungroup nothing happens it seams that they remain grouped since all objects remain selected but the previously option ungroup now says group, but it does not allow me to divide or trim.

You need to click off the items so that they are no longer selected and then click on the element you wish to move :)
