Use of '$' sign before a variable and string ?

//code:// var $overlay = $('<div id="overlay"></div>');

why are we using $before overlay and before the string value??? What is the purpose of that '$'? What happens if i dont use the dollar sign?

its a convention to write a $ in front of an object, so you have a visual differences to regular variables that contain strings or numbers and so on.
