Use Rails to build a RESTful Backend for my HTML5 app?

So my question is - I build PhoneGap apps and i'm wondering if Rails is a good language to build a RESTful Backend to communicate with my database etc from my phonegap app? It seems Rails is a pretty easy and fast way to set up and develop a webbapps with basic http methods, alternative is PHP a better choice?
