I'm certainly no expert but from what I have learned thus far I would say a great text editor (I love Sublime Text 2), MAMP (Mac) or XAMMP (Windows) if you plan on doing local WordPress or general PHP development. Use developer tools in Chrome or Firefox. I just got a slick tool (Seen on the Treehouse Show I believe) for Firefox called Developer Tool Bar which is nice for checking accessibility. I believe there is also a Chrome version. Find an FTP program you like. Filezilla and Cyberduck both work well. Also, learn more about the Terminal/Console on your computer if you haven't already. Hope this points you in the right direction. Basically, use whatever programs work best with your work style.
