Using the article element for article introductory content

Is it semantically permissible to wrap introductory article content with article tags on a home page of a news/publication site that links to the full article/story on a different page ?

For instance:

<article>
   <img>
   <h2>........</h2>
</article>

or would using the section element be more prudent in terms of best practice?

An article is used for an area of text that, if separated from the rest of your content "still makes sense". In this case I would think that using an article element is the proper way to go because the story that you are linking to would be able to stand alone and probably isn't directly related to a story below it.
