Using the built in mediaelement in wordpress with custom field url

Hi,

I am trying to use the built in mediaelement.js in wordpress in my custom theme.

I have a template file that has two custom fields that returns the url of the mp3 audio file or video file.

I am using this code:

echo do_shortcode('[audio src="' . the_field( 'audio' ) . '"]');

But it only returns the url echoed out in the browser.

I i use the code with a hardcoded url it works:

echo do_shortcode('[audio src="example-song.mp3"]');

I hope someone can help me with this little problem :-)
