vendor prefixes

I could use a little help from the Treehouse family. I've done some research and read some articles, but I might possibly be even more confused now than when I began this search for answers. I've looked into Lea Verou's Prefixfree, and I've checked out Auto Prefixer, I've even looked into pure JavaScript solutions, but I still don't have a definitive answer as to the best way to deal with vendor prefixes.

So, I'm asking you all here. Would it be best practices to utilize the information on the website caniuse.com and just insert only the specific vendor prefixes necessary for the job at hand, or would it be better to employ something like Prefixfree or Auto Prefixer? And for a follow up question: how greatly do tools like Prefixfree and Auto Prefixer effect a site's speed and performance?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Robert,

Personally I always add them in manually and test them, that way I know they are present and working as intended. I've never used any of the auto scripts but I presume they add some extra load even if its only a tiny amount.

I guess this is one of those things that will come down to personal preference, try and test both and see which you prefer.

Regards,
