VS code warning when requiring Express

When I require Express in a file, like so:

const express = require('express');

VS Code throws the following warning:

File is a CommonJS module.; it may be converted to an ES module. (ts80001)

Why is this so? And is it a problem? The apps still work though.

Thanks

Hi Andrew Whatmore!

This is just a suggestion from VS Code, not an error. Node.js supports two ways to import modules: CommonJS, which uses require(), and ES modules, which use import.

For example, these two lines accomplish essentially the same thing:

const express = require('express');
import express from 'express';

VS Code is suggesting that you could switch from require to import, but you don't need to. If your app is working correctly, you can safely ignore the warning and continue using require as shown in the course.

Happy coding!
