What am I doing wrong here?

var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith".toUpperCase();
var userName = id
var userName = id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastName;

You forgot to add ".toUpperCase()" to the lastName variable.

var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";

var userName = id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastName.toUpperCase();

What error message did you get? I notice your third line is missing the semi-colon.
